Greetings again, dear passengers!
I was invited to participate in SFSignal's latest roundtable, MIND MELD: The Best Genre-Related Books/Films/Shows Consumed in 2009 (Part 2). It was quite a challenge to narrow down my selection to just a few books ("Oh the pain, the pain!"). BTW, you can check out Linnea Sinclair's answer in Part 1 of this feature here.)
The participants shared tons of amazing material, covers, and images, so I encourage you to stop by and check it out.
I thought we could continue the conversation here, albeit regarding SFR. What were the best science fiction romance stories you read or watched in 2009?
Joyfully yours,
Heather

I love SFR and am always looking for new authors. Here are a few of my favorite SFR reads for ’09:
When Sparks Fly – Autumn Dawn
No Words Alone – Autumn Dawn
Starkissed – Lanette Curington
Beyond the Rain – Jess Granger
Too Close to the Sun – Robin Popp
Gabriel’s Ghost – Linnea Sinclair
Planet X – Evangeline Anderson
Lord of the Dark Sun – Stobie Piel
Shielder series - Catherine Spangler
Here are my top three for 2009. I liked them all for very different reasons, which just shows the wonderful variety of SFR.
Wanderlust - Ann Aguirre
Loved the snarky MC and some of the scenes were terrifying with the level of suspense. A very imaginative story, with some excellent, witty dialogue--both spoken and internal.
Lucy in the Sky - Barbara Elsborg
Laugh out loud funny while still making me fear for the characters. Oh, and some really hot love scenes, too (SFR/erotica).
Beyond the Rain - Jess Granger
Imaginative world- and culture-building, compelling MCs I really cared about. Oh, and the amazing Vicca, who was absolutely adorable--and often stole the show.
I'll have to check out Mind Meld later, but it sounds like a must see.
The new STAR TREK movie! I was busy giving birth and recovering when it was in the theatres, so I just watched it on DVD. I loved everything about it! Chekov was so cute, I just wanted to bake him some cookies. If I was twenty years younger, I swear.
And WARLORD'S DAUGHTER by Susan Grant.
I also loved the new STAR TREK movie!
And I've recently read
GAMES OF COMMAND by Linnea Sinclair
THE WARLORD'S DAUGHTER by Susan Grant
And while it's not strictly SFR, I'm currently reading PRIMARY INVERSION by Catherine Asaro
The only books I finished this year that are SFR are these:
Naked in Death, JD Robb
Finders Keepers, Linnea Sinclair
Shards of Honor, Lois McMaster Bujold
Barrayar, Lois McMaster Bujold
(read the last two in order, they're 2 parts of the same story. Fro me, Aral is one of the best heroes I've read and their love story is wonderful because they have almost unwavering faith in each other.)
I also started several books and misplaced them when I moved--all SFR, among them are:
Down Home Zombie Blues, Linnea Sinclair
After Dark, Jayne Castle
Primary Inversion was awesome! I love that book and the rest of the series. It's on my keepers list. And I was surprised that I really enjoyed the new Star Trek movie too. I like that they included a rationale for the variations from continuity.
The rest of the books I read are SF or space opera with little or no romance in them, or tech books.
I'm halfway through PRIMARY INVERSION, Anna! And so far, it's riveting! Last night I was watching a movie and picking up the book during commercial breaks. LOL.
I've already purchased the next book in the series, CATCH THE LIGHTNING and will be reading that next.
Most of my new encounters in SFR have already been mentioned. The main ones which haven't are Wrapt in Crystal and Heart of Gold, both by Sharon Shinn. They may be too much on the science/technological fiction side to satify some folks around here, but I've become very fond of both. {Smile}
