SFR News & Links For September 2012

Here's to finding a science fiction romance that's right for you!

New releases

ENDGAME (space opera) – Ann Aguirre

Sirantha Jax has the J-gene, which permits her to “jump” faster-than-light ships through grimspace. She loves nothing more than that rush, but the star roads have to wait…
Her final mission takes her to La’heng, a planet subjugated during first contact. Since then, the La’hengrin homeworld has been occupied by foreign conquerors.

All that’s about to change.

Now, as part of a grass-roots resistance, Jax means to liberate the La’hengrin. Political intrigue and guerrilla warfare are new to her; this will be the most dangerous game she’s ever played—spies and conspiracies, a war of weapons and hearts, and everyone might not make it out alive…

RIVETED (The Iron Seas series; steampunk) – Meljean Brook

A century after a devastating volcanic eruption forced Iceland’s inhabitants to abandon its shores, the island has become enshrouded in legend. But the truth behind the legends is mechanical, not magical—and the mystery of the island a matter of life and death for a community of women who once spilled noble blood to secure their freedom.

Five years ago, Annika unwittingly endangered that secret, but her sister Källa took the blame and was exiled. Now Annika serves on an airship, searching for her sister and longing to return home. But that home is threatened when scientific expedition leader David Kentewess comes aboard, looking to expose Annika’s secrets. Then disaster strikes, leaving David and Annika stranded on a glacier and pursued by a madman, with their very survival depending on keeping the heat rising between them—and generating lots of steam…

WARRIOR PRINCE (near future/alien invasion) - Nancy Cohen

When mythologist and Florida resident Nira Larsen accepts a job as tour guide for a mysterious stranger, she’s drawn into a nightmare reality where ancient myths come alive and legendary evils seek to destroy her. To survive, she must awaken her dormant powers, but the only person who can help is the man whose touch inflames her passion.

After a dimensional rift in the Bermuda Triangle cracks open and an ancient enemy invades Earth, Zohar-leader of the galactic warriors known as the Drift Lords-summons his troops. He doesn’t count on a redheaded spitfire getting in his way and capturing his heart. Nira has the power to defeat the enemy and to enslave Zohar’s soul. Can he trust her enough to accomplish his mission, or will she lure him to his doom?

Free superhero romance book

BLAZE OF GLORY, the first book in Sheryl Nantus’ superhero romance series is free from September 1-14! You can discover how it all began in time for the release of the trilogy’s third book, HEROES LOST AND FOUND (October 1, Samhain Publishing). (This action-adventure series can also be tagged as romantic superhero SF since the romance is a subplot).

This is shrewd marketing for SFR books. Let me know about your freebie SFR deals and I’ll blog about them.

Cover reveals

At CONTACT – Infinite Futures, J.L. Hilton revealed the cover for STELLARNET PRINCE. Check out her commentary on the book’s tags.

Another cover reveal happened at Spacefreighters Lounge: Pippa Jay revealed the cover for her forthcoming sci-fi romance short story “*Terms & Conditions Apply.”

Serialized sci-fi romance

Dear Author recently featured an in-depth post on serialized fiction, including this intriguing news:

Carina Press is launching a serial by Zaide Bishop in 2013.  It is a science fiction/futuristic and each installment will be around 20-30k and the pricing will be similar to other Carina Press novellas. Says Executive Editor Angela James, “We wanted to provide readers with a somewhat seamless reading  experience that wasn’t interrupted or prolonged by wait for author to write it & still guaranteed the satisfactory conclusion of a romance novel.”

I first blogged about the topic of serialized SFR in 2010. I still think it’s a strategic move in terms of generating visibility for the subgenre. It’ll be interesting to see how Zaide Bishop’s series goes. I’ll do some research about it and report back.
