ABC To Adapt K-Drama MY LOVE FROM ANOTHER STAR

OHMYGOSH OMYGOSH OMYGOSH!

Remember My Epic Post On MY LOVE FROM ANOTHER STAR in which I wrote, "I wonder if someone is going to purchase the rights for a U.S. version of this show. Wouldn't surprise me."?

Well, color me ecstatic because The Hollywood Reporter recently announced ABC Adapting Hot Korean Drama 'My Love From Another Star' (Exclusive):

ABC is looking to Korean format My Love From Another Star for its next breakout hit.
The network has handed out a script commitment with a penalty attached to a remake of the Korean hit, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on the Korean format, My Love explores why a superhero has to save the world and asks why he can't save just one girl. ABC's take is described as epic supernatural love story about a world-famous actress, Lark, and her anti-social neighbor, James, who happens to be from another planet. Disillusioned by the pettiness of human nature, and a resident of Earth for the past several hundred years, James has a centuries-old rule that he will never use his abilities to intervene in the lives of the people around him. But when he gets a premonition that the infuriatingly self-centered but compelling Lark is going to be murdered, James finds himself drawn into her chaotic life and falling deeply in love — just as he finally has the chance to return to his home in the stars.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

If ABC commits, this would mean the airing of a sci-fi romance on a U.S. mainstream television network!

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

This news could mean great things for SFR. Why? Well, MY LOVE FROM ANOTHER STAR already has a huge fan base. An American version could translate to many more, thus potentially giving SFR a boost. The Hollywood Reporter article laid out the stats regarding just how popular the show has been:

…the fantasy romance earned star Jun Ji-hyun the highest award for TV at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards. The series ranked as Korea's favorite program in a Gallup Korea poll in February after captivating an average viewership of 24 percent. The show drew record viewership in Korea and China, where it became one of the most-viewed streaming shows on Chinese platform iqiyi, collecting more than 2.5 billion streams during the three-month window. earned star Jun Ji-hyun the highest award for TV at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards. All those fans can't be wrong!

I know, I know--I need to take a deep breath because at this stage ABC has only made a script commitment. Doesn't mean the series will happen.

The script commitment alone, though, is great validation for SFR. There are other elements that made MY LOVE FROM ANOTHER STAR a huge hit, but we can't rule out the fact that the basic premise offered viewers something different from the usual fare. The show found a way to reinvent sci-fi romance and packaged the genre in familiar wrappings. Maybe it's primed more people to explore other available stories.

I'm delighted about this phenomenon and am crossing my fingers that ABC commits to a series. Nothing can possibly replace the original show, but I'm jazzed about the possibility of having an alternate version to enjoy as well.

Stay tuned to TGE because I'll be keeping tabs on developing news about ABC's adaptation of this ever so popular Korean drama!
